Music, moonlight and Helmingham - a magical combination
Enjoy the magic of Mozart
20th March 2026
Helmingham Hall is excited to welcome guests for a set of intimate concert experiences, set beneath the glow of a giant moon in the magnificent Great Hall.
Join us on Friday 20th March at 6pm, as the acclaimed Kavolini string ensemble returns for an enchanting evening of classical music.
Kavolini, a dynamic string group based in Norfolk, was formed in 2015 by musicians who have performed with prestigious British orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. The ensemble’s members have also toured globally, working with renowned bands like Blur, The Cranberries, and The Pretenders.
Magic of Mozart invites listeners into the radiant world of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, where elegance, wit, and emotional depth intertwine with effortless grace. This string quartet programme celebrates Mozart at his most charming and most profound, tracing a journey from sparkling divertimento to masterful quartet writing.
The evening opens with the ever-beloved Eine kleine Nachtmusik, a work whose opening bars are instantly recognisable and endlessly captivating. Beneath its bright, convivial surface lies Mozart’s extraordinary gift for balance and clarity, as playful dialogue between the instruments gives way to moments of lyrical tenderness and refined poise.
Mozart’s Divertimento in D major continues the spirit of delight and conversation. Originally intended as light entertainment, this work reveals far more than its title suggests: exuberant rhythms, graceful melodies, and passages of surprising sophistication. The quartet format allows each instrument to shine, creating a vivid musical exchange that is both joyful and intimate.
The programme culminates in String Quartet No. 14 in G major, K.387, the first of the celebrated “Haydn” quartets. Here, Mozart reaches new expressive heights, blending intellectual brilliance with heartfelt warmth. From its radiant opening to the exhilarating fugal finale, the quartet showcases Mozart’s deep understanding of the string quartet as a form of equals, rich in nuance, contrast, and emotional resonance.
Together, these works reveal the many faces of Mozart’s genius—playful, elegant, and profound—offering an evening of music that feels at once magical, uplifting, and timeless.
